Anne no Nikki: Anne Frank Monogatari chronicles the true story of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl living in Amsterdam during World War II. When her father, realizing the danger faced by Jews, hides his family, including his wife Edith, his two daughters Margo (16) and Anne (13), and four other people, in a secret room called “the house behind,” the eight of them survive for two years in darkness and quiet, constantly fearing discovery and deportation to German crematoria. During that time young Anne keeps a diary, documenting daily life in the cellar, her complex relationship with her mother, and the budding romance with Peter, the young boy who also hides with them. She writes of her longing to escape, to breathe fresh air and smell flowers, and to be free at last. Then they are discovered.
