The story takes place in a remote village in Kōchi Prefecture, Japan, during World War II. Despite the distance from the front, the villagers have internalized a perception of Americans and Britons as “brutes,” shaped by the deaths and injuries of relatives who served abroad. Eiko, an elementary schoolgirl who has moved from Yokohama, arrives in this village and stands out because of her blue eyes inherited from her American father. Her classmates, the teachers, and even her homeroom teacher Akiko treat her without restraint, allowing bullying to continue unchecked. A boy named Kenta, however, sees Eiko with curiosity rather than hostility. As the children’s lives are touched by the injuries and hardships of the war, their attitudes and interactions begin to shift.
