Blue‑eyed Dolls were gifted to Japanese elementary schools and kindergartens in 1927 by the United States, led by Dr. Gulick, to promote friendship between Japan and America. Roughly 12,000 dolls were distributed. When the Pacific War began in 1941, many of these dolls were destroyed, burned or stabbed with bamboo spears, because they were seen as symbols of an enemy country. The story follows children who attempt to rescue the dolls.
