The Yamada sisters, Kyo and Asu, are a 15‑year‑old junior high student and a 9‑year‑old elementary student, respectively. After their mother died and their father fled the house to escape gambling debts, the two girls decide to face their hardships with enthusiasm and pride. A recent reform of the legal system allows Kyo to attend school while taking temporary jobs, such as newspaper delivery and tutoring, to support the family. Meanwhile, Asu handles household chores, prepares meals, and manages the family finances to help her older sister. Their lives are further enriched by supportive neighbors, including the kind novelist Saegusa‑san.
