Chibikko Remi to Meiken Kapi is a condensed, faithful adaptation of Hector Malot’s novel *Sans Famille*. It follows the young orphan Remi, who is sold to the traveling musician Vitalis and becomes part of his troupe of performing animals. The film features musical numbers typical of early Toei productions, some clumsy slapstick humor, numerous emotionally charged scenes, and smooth animation. While technically polished and pleasant to behold, the story is largely melodramatic and somewhat maudlin, leaving much to be desired in terms of narrative depth. In contrast, the later Dezaki/Sugino adaptation expands the tale into 52 episodes, allowing the plot to breathe and delivering a more compelling storytelling experience.
