A follow‑up from the same studio that produced the Helen Keller anime, *A Little Love Letter* retains the focus on disability while telling an entirely Japanese story. In the 1970s, actress Mariko Miyagi became deeply involved with the Silk Tree Academy (Nemunoki Gakuen), a rehabilitation center for disabled children. To raise awareness for the project, she appeared in several live‑action films, including *The Silk Tree Ballad*, *Mariko‑Mother*, and *Children Drawing Rainbows*. The anime chronicles the fourteen‑year span of Miyagi’s stewardship of the academy, exploring her relationships with several of the children. Divided into four seasonal chapters, the series features highly realistic character designs modeled on the real people involved and employs detailed storyboarding drawn from the original material.
