Satoru, Akira, and Ichiro ride bicycles, weaving through pedestrians, when they nearly collide with a car at an intersection. They are saved by Doctor X, who later sends them a letter containing photographs of alternative futures. These images depict the accident and illustrate the outcomes of their lives had he not intervened.
