Description

During World War II, the Japanese government established the neighborhood community, known as Tonari‑gumi, as the smallest unit of its national mobilization program. The purpose was to regulate rationing and enforce thought control more efficiently. Each Tonari‑gumi comprised five to ten households, which worked together to assist one another and watch for suspicious activity. A title song created to promote the program became a popular hit in Japan, celebrated for its cheerful melody.
