After his mother dies when he is two, Nello is taken in by his grandfather in a small village. One day he rescues a nearly beaten dog and names it Patrasche. With his grandfather’s careful care, the dog heals, and the two become inseparable companions. Because the family is poor, Nello helps his grandfather sell milk in town, and Patrasche assists by pulling the milk cart.
