Description
Fuku‑chan, a highly popular newspaper comic strip boy character of his era, is the focus of this film. It dramatizes a submarine assault on an enemy cargo ship, an event intended to bolster patriotism. The movie also highlights the submarine’s kitchen crew, whose lively cooking scenes resonated particularly with Japanese children. Released in November of the same year, the film arrived amid Japan’s severe food shortages; the abundant provisions in the submarine’s kitchen, vegetables, fruit, fish, rice, and other luxury items of the time, were prepared into a variety of dishes while a cheerful, rhythmic song accompanied the action.
