On July 27, 1996, Takeyuki Kanda, born August 11, 1943, passed away suddenly at age 52. Kanda had directed several animated works, including the VIFAM series. In tribute to him, a new TV series of VIFAM was produced and aired in 1998 from March 21 to October 3 in the Kansai region. The 26‑episode side story introduces new characters, a new RV, and other fresh elements. Its narrative can be inserted between episodes 22 and 26 of the original series (episodes 24 and 25 are digest summaries). The series is divided into three parts: Act I (episodes 1–14), Interlude (episodes 15–18), and Act II (episodes 19–26). While Act I and Act II are only loosely related, the series is sometimes called a “New Testament” and is now regarded as apocryphal.
