From the moment Mazu was born, it was clear she was unlike ordinary people. She never cried or fussed, and she carried the protective power of a primordial spirit. When a jellyfish‑shaped monster from the sea tried to harm the newborn Mazu, the spirit manifested and chased the creature away. During the struggle, the monster knocked over a candlestick and set the curtains aflame. Although the family extinguished the fire quickly, the incident frightened Mazu and instilled a deep fear of fire that has stayed with her ever since.
