Inamura no Hi (1989)
Inamura no Hi (1990) / Inamuranohi / 稲むらの火
Description
Set in 1854, the film recounts the true events of the Nankai earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. Five samurai from a village saw the distant wave and tried to warn neighboring communities to evacuate, but their pleas were largely ignored. To compel action, they set fire to the threshed rice crops, convincing villagers that the entire harvest was burning. The ruse succeeded, almost every resident rushed to the fields to extinguish the blaze, as their livelihood depended on the rice. When the tsunami arrived, the villages below were devastated, but the evacuation saved many lives.
