Description

Jarinko Chie is a 1981 film directed by Hayao Takahata, adapted from the popular manga by Etsumi Haruki. The story follows ten‑year‑old Chie, dubbed “the most unfortunate girl in Japan,” who runs her family’s diner while her unemployed yakuza father and separated mother handle the rest of the household. Though its premise sounds bleak, the film delivers sharp comedy, set against Osaka’s distinct culture, which differs markedly from Tokyo’s.
