Description
Jarinko Chie is a 1981 film directed by Isao Takahata, adapted from the popular manga by Etsumi Haruki. The story follows ten‑year‑old Chie, known as “the most unfortunate girl in Japan,” who takes charge of her family’s diner while her father, an unemployed yakuza, and her mother are separated. Set in Osaka, a city with a culture distinct from Tokyo, Chie’s everyday struggles are portrayed with humor, making the narrative a surprisingly funny comedy. Following the film’s success, a TV series was produced, with Takahata serving as chief director.
