Kenichi is a first‑year middle‑school student who can’t endure the relentless bullying he faces. On the third day of torment, he jumps from the third‑floor window of the school in an attempt to end his life, but miraculously he is rescued and brought to the hospital. While recovering, he is placed in a room with Jun Hayashi, an older student who suffers from a severe heart condition and can only move in a wheelchair. As Kenichi’s classmates and his mother visit him, he learns that everyone believes he fell from the window by accident and that story is passed on to his mother, who believes it. Jun, with a brighter outlook on life, shows Kenichi that there is still a reason to live even when the world feels hostile. The two grow close and vow to eat ramen together one day. On the night before Jun’s surgery, they finally go on that ramen adventure. On the way to the operating room, Jun yells at Kenichi, “If you ever decide to end your life, give me your life. If you don’t need it, please give it to me!” From that moment, Kenichi’s will to live is reignited. He begins to enjoy good food, play games, and pursue whatever he wants, including attending school or even changing schools, things Jun never has the opportunity to do because of his heart. Through Jun’s support, Kenichi realizes that there are people who would gladly trade their own lives for his, giving him the strength to keep going.
