Many years ago, a young woman named Unai‑Otome lived in the village of Ikuta. Because of her beauty, she attracted two suitors, both deeply in love with her. Torn between them, she ultimately chose a third option, taking her own life. Although her intentions were pure, even in death she did not find the solace she sought. Decades later, a pilgrim passing by her grave encounters a beautiful young woman, and Unai‑Otome’s story rises again from the depths of time. The film, based on a classic Noh play, showcases Kawamoto’s mastery at its peak through an expert mediation of the absurdity of the human condition.
