Hans is kneading dough when the North Wind blows all the flour out of his bowl. Frustrated, he travels to the North Wind’s castle to demand that the wind stop and to seek compensation. The North Wind rewards him with a tablecloth that magically summons delicious food whenever it is laid. Unfortunately, an innkeeper swindles Hans out of this wondrous tablecloth. Undeterred, Hans returns to the North Wind. This time he receives a sheep that drops gold coins. The innkeeper again attempts to swindle Hans away from the sheep’s treasure, but fails. Determined to recover his losses, Hans visits the North Wind a third time and is given a scepter. The North Wind has secretly booby‑trapped the scepter to identify who is stealing his gifts. When the innkeeper tries to swindle the scepter, he is punished, and Hans is able to keep all three fantastical items. With the tablecloth, the coin‑dropping sheep, and the magical scepter safely in his possession, Hans returns home, having reclaimed the rewards that were originally meant for him.
