Description
Based on a novel by Okamoto Kidou, the film draws on a legend surrounding a barren stretch of land at the base of Mt. Chausu, an active volcano in Tochigi Prefecture. Since the Heian period, the area has been notorious for releasing poisonous gases, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, and arsenic, that have killed animals and travelers alike. The legend tells of a kitsune that once disguised itself as a beautiful maiden in China, seduced the emperor, and caused numerous misfortunes across the kingdom. It then traveled to Japan, where it again took the form of a beautiful maiden named Tamamo, seduced the emperor, and ultimately was unmasked and killed. Upon her …
