In A.D. 2009, humanity is embroiled in a three‑way war against the giant humanoid aliens known as the Zentraedi (male) and Meltrandi (female). A space fold sends the Macross space fortress, and a portion of South Atalia Island, toward the outer edge of the Solar System, putting Macross on a return journey to Earth. During a brief skirmish with Zentraedi forces, rookie pilot Hikaru Ichijo rescues idol singer Lynn Minmay, and their bond deepens while they are stranded somewhere aboard the ship.
