Naki no Ryuu: Hiryuu no Shou (1991) is an OVA produced separately by Toshiba, unlike the earlier entries in the series. The story follows Ryuu, also known as the Crying Dragon, a mysterious man who frequently plays mahjong with a group of gang members. He only wins by calling a “ron” – a win that requires waiting for the opponent’s tile to complete his hand. The term “ron” is also called “naki” in mahjong, which shares the same pronunciation as “crying” in Japanese. The anime is adapted from Nojo Junichi’s manga that ran during the 1980s and 1990s.
