Nanami Simpson is a young girl whose mother dies early in her life. She moves to live with her father, Scott Simpson, aboard the research vessel *Peperonchino*. Scott is a marine biologist searching for the elusive Glowing Whale. After discovering the bones of one, he is saddened and shifts his focus to preserving and caring for these creatures. Nanami befriends an orca she names Tico and swims with it daily. She eventually learns to breathe underwater, astonishing her father. When she nearly drowns, a Glowing Whale rescues her and returns her to the vessel, where her father finally gets to see the creature.
