The 25‑minute film follows an ailing elderly woman named Itako. The story opens with Itako lying bedridden for an extended period. A fox named Okon enters her home, and Itako tells him he may take whatever he wishes, for she has nothing left to use. Okon is delighted and, in return for her kindness, a gesture of ongaeshi, performs a magical jyōruri, a ballad accompanied by shamisen, which heals Itako and restores her strength enough to walk again. Everyone is astonished by her sudden recovery. Later, Itako learns that a hunter, badly wounded and near death, needs help. She hides Okon inside her shirt and has the fox sing the song while…
