The story follows 16‑year‑old Hiroshi Kuzumi, who has just moved to the seemingly tranquil village of Jogamachi. Nestled in the mountains, far from the city, the village is split by a river into old Jogamachi and new Jogamachi. Hiroshi quickly learns that the village is steeped in ancient history and mysterious traditions that have been preserved over the ages. Though initially unsettled by his new surroundings, he begins to settle into life there and, despite never being a popular figure, soon earns the affection of his classmates, except for the aloof class president, Nemuru Kushinada, whose only words to Hiroshi are a warning to stay away.
