The animals gather for a swimming contest, and the proud Saru‑kun, a monkey, is determined to compete even though he cannot swim. He dives in, but quickly begins to sink. The pool’s bottom is covered with seaweed and coral, and a kappa, a water imp, dwells there. Saru‑kun battles the kappa and captures its saucer from its head. In exchange for its saucer, the kappa offers to let Saru‑kun ride on its back while he swims. Riding the kappa, Saru‑kun glides confidently through the pool, appearing as though he is swimming on his own power, and ultimately wins the race. What happens at the finish line remains to be seen.
