Rennyo played a pivotal role in reviving Shin Buddhism in Japan, particularly the Honganji lineage, during a period of decline in the Middle Ages. Legend holds that at the age of six, his mother summoned him, declaring that he was destined to restore the fortunes of the Honganji school, her words were his guiding light. She then vanished from the temple, leaving him alone to carry her message. Growing up amid severe poverty and hardship, Rennyo embraced his destiny, and by the age of sixteen he began spreading the teachings across the land.
