The series is set in the past and follows the Saiyuki quartet before they form their group, charting their journey to the West. The first OVA opens with Sanzo and his master, and introduces Ukoku, who later becomes known as Ni Jianyi. The second OVA depicts Goku’s first meeting with Sanzo. The third OVA explores the aftermath of Hakkai’s sins and his trial, events already seen in the first season of *Saiyuki*, and follows his decision to stay in Gojyo’s house.
