Combining live action and animation, *Sayounara Kaba‑kun* presents the true story of the animals at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo during the harsh days of World War II, when bombing raids and shortages took their toll. The film focuses on the hippos, who were eventually butchered for food in the closing days of the conflict. New Type described the story as “a study of the tragedy of war and a prayer for peace.”
