After an ominous dream of a white elephant, the ancient Hindu princess Maya gives birth to a prince. Raised in seclusion, Prince Siddhartha is shaken by the sight of poverty and deprivation at the age of twelve. Though married to a beautiful wife, he cannot bear the thought of others suffering and leaves the palace in search of an answer. While seated beneath a tree, he attains enlightenment.
