Academy City is a technologically advanced metropolis, reportedly 20 to 30 years ahead of the rest of the world, and 80 % of its 2.3 million residents are students. Education here is focused on developing esper abilities. Among the top-level espers is Misaka Mikoto, who shares a dorm room with Kuroko Shirai, another high‑level esper and a member of Judgement, a student‑run law‑enforcement agency. Both attend Tokiwadai, a private school reserved for the wealthy and the most powerful. Kuroko’s partner in Judgement is Kazari Uiharu, a low‑level esper who studies at Sakugawa Middle School. Kazari’s best friend and classmate at that school is Ruiko Saten, a level‑zero student who has no esper powers. Together, the four form an unlikely but tightly bonded group that navigates the challenges of Academy City.
