Working since before World War II, Ueda Shoji broke through amateurism to become a pioneering photographer. In his visual world he takes, cuts, and rearranges images according to his own sensibility, a process that led him into the new media realm of Ga‑anime. He was encouraged in this pursuit by his friend, actor Sano Shiro, who was born in the same prefecture. The exhibition features images from Ueda’s most famous “Dune Mode” series as well as many pre‑ and post‑war photographs of his birthplace, streetcars running through Tokyo, and traditional scenes of Japan, offering a glimpse into a rich cultural tapestry.
