Description

Urashima Taro is an early Japanese animated film that draws on the well‑known folk tale of an honest fisherman who rescues a sea turtle from bullies on a beach and is then invited to an underwater castle. The film was originally thought to have been produced by director Kitayama at Nippon Katsudo Shashin Corporation (Nikkatsu) in 1918, based on its content and the circumstances surrounding its discovery. Recently, stills from a 1918 Nikkatsu release titled Urashima Taro were found in a magazine; these images do not appear in the film in question, leading scholars to conclude that the film is not the Kitayama production attributed to the Nikkatsu studio.
