In the United States, the Civil War has just broken out, and Mr. March, a physician and father of four daughters, goes to the front. Madam March remains at home with her daughters: the eldest, Margaret (Meg); Josephine (Jo), a budding writer; Elisabeth (Beth), a timid but passionate pianist; and the newest addition, Amy, who loves to draw. The girls quickly become acquainted with their neighbor, Mr. Lawrence, whom they find a little intimidating at first, and with his grandson Laurie, who is Jo’s age. Together, they face many hardships and share moments of happiness amid the turmoil of war. They navigate Aunt March’s temper, sibling jealousy, and the joys that arise against a backdrop of conflict, all while hoping that their father will return safe and sound.
