Description
Yuki no Taiyou Pilot is remembered for being Hayao Miyazaki’s first solo directorial effort. Although he would later team with Isao Takahata on later episodes of the 1971–72 Lupin III series, this pilot saw Miyazaki at the helm alone. The story is adapted from Tetsuya Chiba’s popular shōjo manga of the same name, serialized in 1963. It follows a 10‑year‑old orphan who is adopted into a family, and the plot unfolds as a complex, grand melodrama. Chiba’s stories are regarded as more sophisticated and mature than those of contemporaries such as Osamu Tezuka, the godfather of post‑war Japanese manga.
