Akira 4K Theatrical Re-release Under POM’s Slate

Akira 4K Theatrical Re-release

The legendary 1988 cyberpunk anime Akira is set to return to the big screen across Europe in stunning 4K resolution, marking a major highlight in Piece of Magic Entertainment’s (POM) expanded anime distribution slate. The re-release aims to introduce a new generation of moviegoers to one of the most influential animated films of all time, while giving longtime fans the opportunity to experience its groundbreaking visuals and sound design in ultra-high definition.

Originally directed by Katsuhiro Otomo and based on his own manga of the same name, Akira is widely credited with redefining what animation could achieve, both technically and thematically. Its dystopian vision of Neo-Tokyo, paired with complex political and philosophical undertones, helped establish anime as a serious cinematic medium in the West and remains a touchstone in pop culture to this day.

The re-release of Akira is part of a broader initiative by POM to bring iconic and critically acclaimed anime titles back to theaters. The slate also includes Grave of the Fireflies, the poignant Studio Ghibli classic directed by Isao Takahata, and Lupin the IIIrd: The Immortal Bloodline, a recent entry in the beloved Lupin franchise known for blending action, style, and nostalgia.

The 4K restoration of Akira has already impressed audiences in previous limited runs, but this marks the first time it will see a wide European theatrical rollout under POM's banner. Screenings will begin in late 2025, with select theaters offering special presentations including original Japanese audio with subtitles and dubbed versions.

With anime continuing to surge in global popularity, POM’s initiative reflects the growing demand for classic and high-quality Japanese animation on the big screen, not just as niche interest but as cinema worthy of celebration.

Full screening schedules and participating countries will be announced soon via POM’s official channels.
