Four decades after audiences first discovered the mysterious floating kingdom of Laputa, Hayao Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky is returning to theaters for its 40th anniversary.
The 1986 Studio Ghibli classic is being screened across the United States as part of Studio Ghibli Fest 2026, organized by GKIDS and Fathom Entertainment. The anniversary screenings run from August 22 through August 26, 2026, giving longtime fans and a new generation the opportunity to experience Miyazaki's adventure on the big screen once again.
Castle in the Sky Celebrates 40 Years
Originally released in Japan in 1986, Castle in the Sky was the first animated feature officially produced under the Studio Ghibli name. Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the film helped establish many of the themes and visual ideas that would become closely associated with the legendary studio.
The story follows Pazu, a young engineer's apprentice, and Sheeta, a mysterious girl who descends from the sky with the help of a glowing crystal pendant. Together, they search for Laputa, a legendary castle floating above the clouds, while being pursued by pirates and government agents who want to uncover the ancient city's secrets and power.
Airships, enormous robots, forgotten technology and spectacular landscapes make Castle in the Sky one of the defining adventure films of early Studio Ghibli.

A Landmark in Studio Ghibli History
The anniversary carries particular significance because Castle in the Sky occupies an important place in Studio Ghibli's history.
Although Miyazaki had already directed films including Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky became the first feature released by the newly established Studio Ghibli.
Many elements that would later become signatures of Miyazaki's work are already present: fascination with flight, distrust of unchecked military power, environmental themes, imaginative machinery and young protagonists confronting a world shaped by the ambitions of adults.
Laputa itself remains one of the most memorable locations in classic anime, combining an ancient civilization with futuristic technology and a natural world that has slowly reclaimed the abandoned city.
Four Decades and Still Flying
Forty years after its original release, Castle in the Sky remains one of the essential films in the Studio Ghibli catalog. Its mixture of science fiction, fantasy and old-fashioned adventure has allowed the movie to remain remarkably accessible despite its age.
The 2026 theatrical return is therefore more than a nostalgic screening. It gives audiences the chance to see the enormous environments, aerial battles and hand-drawn animation of Miyazaki's early masterpiece in the format for which they were originally created: a cinema screen.
For retro anime fans, it is also another reminder of the extraordinary longevity of 1980s Japanese animation. Four decades later, Pazu and Sheeta are heading toward Laputa once again and this time, audiences can join them back in theaters.
Studio Ghibli Fest 2026 Continues
