The beloved JRPG classic is coming back in a full-scale remake. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined brings the spirit of the original adventure to a new generation with modern visuals, refined mechanics, and smoother storytelling. Scheduled for release on February 5, 2026, the remake promises to honor the legacy of one of the longest Dragon Quest titles ever made.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix has confirmed multiple editions including Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Collector’s Edition featuring exclusive bonuses such as artwork, DLC, and collector items.
This version introduces a stunning new art direction described as a “hand-crafted diorama style.” Characters, monsters, and towns are reimagined in vivid detail, merging the nostalgic 90s JRPG feel with the visual fidelity of today’s consoles. It aims to retain the warm tone of the original while providing a more immersive presentation.
The battle system has been overhauled to include faster encounters, visible enemies on the field, and a new “Moonlighting” dual-vocation mechanic that allows more flexible character builds. Players can also expect improved pacing, streamlined exploration, and modern quality-of-life features such as auto-saving, speed-up options, and easier navigation.
The game’s story remains faithful to the original: a group of friends from the peaceful island of Estard discover ancient tablets that unlock forgotten lands lost in time. As they restore each island and learn its history, they uncover the truth behind the world’s mysterious fragmentation. The narrative is now fully voiced, with reworked cutscenes and new side quests that add depth to the main story.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is not just a visual upgrade. It introduces rebalanced job progression, new monsters to recruit, enhanced skill animations, and an optional modern UI mode. Square Enix also confirmed that the remake will feature new music arrangements by Koichi Sugiyama’s successors and additional story endings not seen in previous versions.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined launches globally on February 5, 2026, with Steam versions in some regions available the next day. Pre-orders are open now, and the Collector’s Edition comes with a SteelBook case, mini soundtrack, and digital content pack.
Dragon Quest VII is one of the most iconic games in the franchise’s history. Its 2026 reimagining bridges classic JRPG storytelling with modern game design, making it a perfect entry point for newcomers and a nostalgic revival for longtime fans. With upgraded visuals, faster gameplay, and new content, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is shaping up to be one of 2026’s most exciting RPG releases.
