EAT-MAN Returns After 28 Years With Brand-New Anime The Over Order

A cult science-fiction anime from the 1990s is making an unexpected comeback. EAT-MAN is officially returning with a completely new anime titled EAT-MAN The Over Order, marking the franchise's first new anime production in 28 years.

The project was officially announced on September 10, 2026, bringing Bolt Crank back to the screen for the first time since EAT-MAN '98.

EAT-MAN Returns Nearly Three Decades Later

Created by Akihito Yoshitomi, EAT-MAN originally began as a manga in 1996 before receiving its first television anime adaptation in 1997.

A second anime, EAT-MAN '98, followed the next year. Since then, the franchise has largely remained absent from animation, making the announcement of The Over Order particularly significant for fans of 1990s anime.

The new project will be the third anime adaptation of the series and the first new animated production since 1998.

Masashi Ebara Returns as Bolt Crank

One of the biggest surprises surrounding the announcement is the return of Masashi Ebara as protagonist Bolt Crank.

Ebara previously voiced Bolt in the earlier anime adaptations and will reprise the role more than two decades later, giving the new production a direct connection to the original series.

Bolt Crank is a mysterious traveler and adventurer with one of anime's more unusual abilities: he can consume metal and other objects before recreating them from his body, often in the form of powerful weapons.

Original Creator Akihito Yoshitomi Is Directly Involved

The return will also feature significant involvement from original EAT-MAN creator Akihito Yoshitomi.

Yoshitomi is responsible for the scripts and original design concepts for EAT-MAN The Over Order, rather than simply serving as the creator of the source material.

This could allow the new anime to remain closely connected to the distinctive science-fiction world and atmosphere that made the original manga and anime memorable.

EAT-MAN The Over Order Staff

The anime is being produced by Studio Cab.

  • Director: Shunji Oga
  • Scripts / Original Design Concepts: Akihito Yoshitomi
  • Character Design: Satoshi Hirayama
  • Animation Production: Studio Cab
  • Bolt Crank: Masashi Ebara

Director Shunji Oga has previously worked on productions including Golgo 13, while character designer Satoshi Hirayama is known for his work connected to the Lupin the 3rd franchise.

The First Teaser Brings Back Bolt's Famous Ability

The announcement was accompanied by a short teaser video offering the first glimpse of the new production.

In the footage, Bolt discovers a screw in the wilderness, eats the piece of metal and uses his ability to reconstruct it into a much larger weapon, immediately reintroducing the strange power that defines the character.

A new teaser visual drawn by Yoshitomi was also released alongside the announcement.

What Is EAT-MAN?

For those unfamiliar with the series, EAT-MAN follows the journeys of Bolt Crank, an enigmatic adventurer who travels through a science-fiction world taking on dangerous jobs.

Unlike a traditional hero, Bolt is usually calm, mysterious and difficult to read. His ability to consume objects, particularly metal and weapons, and later reproduce them gives the series one of the most distinctive protagonists of 1990s anime.

The original manga was serialized from 1996 to 2003 and collected into 19 volumes.

The franchise later returned to manga with EAT-MAN: The Main Dish, which began serialization in 2014, but an animated continuation or reboot had remained absent until now.

A Major Revival for a Forgotten 1990s Anime

The return of EAT-MAN is another example of older anime franchises being introduced to a new generation decades after their original runs.

What makes The Over Order particularly interesting, however, is that this is not simply a 4K restoration, theatrical re-release or anniversary compilation.

It is a completely new anime production, featuring the original protagonist's voice actor and direct creative involvement from the manga's creator.

For longtime fans, hearing Masashi Ebara as Bolt Crank again after 28 years should make EAT-MAN The Over Order one of the more intriguing retro-anime revivals currently in development.

When Will EAT-MAN The Over Order Be Released?

As of the September 10 announcement, the production committee has not revealed a release date for EAT-MAN The Over Order.

The episode count, Japanese broadcaster and international streaming platforms have also yet to be confirmed.

More information about the new anime is expected to be revealed as production progresses.

After nearly three decades away from television animation, Bolt Crank is finally preparing to travel again, and for fans of classic 1990s science-fiction anime, EAT-MAN's unexpected return is one worth watching.
