The legendary cyberpunk franchise Ghost in the Shell is returning with a brand-new television anime series produced by the acclaimed animation studio Science SARU, and the first teaser trailer has just been revealed. Fans of the series now have their first look at the upcoming adaptation, which is slated to premiere in July 2026.
The newly released teaser offers an early glimpse of the animated world and characters, suggesting a visual direction that honors the original manga by Masamune Shirow. The promotional material focuses on striking imagery and teases the cyberpunk atmosphere that made the franchise iconic.

Science SARU is leading production on this new anime series, with Moko-chan at the helm as director in their first full directorial role. The screenplay and series composition will be handled by acclaimed author Toh EnJoe, known for his work on Godzilla Singular Point. Character designs and chief animation direction are by Shuhei Handa, whose work includes titles like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
This new adaptation of Ghost in the Shell is expected to bring the franchise back to its origins, closely following the tone and style of Shirow’s groundbreaking 1989-91 manga. It marks a fresh chapter for the series, which has seen numerous films and television adaptations over the past three decades.
The anime is scheduled to premiere in July 2026 on Japanese television through networks such as Kansai TV and Fuji TV as part of the “Ka-Anival!!” programming block. International streaming details have not yet been confirmed.
As anticipation builds, fans around the world are watching for more details on additional teasers, cast announcements, and release platforms. Stay tuned for further updates as the premiere date approaches.
In addition to the teaser and staff announcements, a special interview with famed director Mamoru Oshii was featured as part of the “Ghost and the Shell” exhibition in early 2026. In the interview, Oshii reflects on the enduring legacy of the franchise he helped elevate with his landmark 1995 film, discussing how its philosophical and cyberpunk themes continue to resonate with audiences decades later. His thoughts helped set the tone for the exhibition and connected the new Science SARU project with the broader history of Ghost in the Shell adaptations, showing how the upcoming series builds on the narrative and thematic foundations that made the original work so influential.
