Gurren Lagann Is Back in 4K
Nearly two decades after its original television debut, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is once again making headlines. Anime Limited has officially announced a brand-new 4K UHD Collector's Edition for both Gurren Lagann movies, giving fans the opportunity to experience one of anime's greatest modern classics in its highest quality ever.
Originally released in 2008 and 2009, Gurren Lagann the Movie: Childhood's End and The Lights in the Sky Are Stars condensed Studio Gainax's legendary 2007 television series into two spectacular theatrical productions while expanding several iconic battles with brand-new animation.
A Premium Collector's Release
The upcoming Collector's Edition has been designed specifically for longtime fans and collectors. The release includes both feature films on 4K Ultra HD and standard Blu-ray discs, all housed inside premium collector packaging.
According to Anime Limited, the release features:
- Both Gurren Lagann movies in native 4K UHD.
- High Dynamic Range (HDR) presentation for improved colors and contrast.
- A newly produced English dub.
- The original Japanese audio with English subtitles.
- Japanese cast audio commentary.
- Exclusive collector packaging and bonus art cards.
Pre-Orders Open This Week
Early Bird pre-orders officially opened on July 16, 2026 through Anime Limited's online store. The Collector's Edition is scheduled to release on August 31, 2026, while a standalone 4K Standard Edition will arrive later this year.
For collectors who simply want the films without the premium packaging, Anime Limited will also offer a standard Blu-ray edition featuring the same newly authored discs and updated English dub.
Why Gurren Lagann Still Matters
When Gurren Lagann premiered in 2007, it quickly became one of the defining mecha anime of its generation. Directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and produced by Studio Gainax, the series combined explosive animation, unforgettable characters, and an inspiring message about overcoming impossible odds.
Its influence can still be seen across modern anime, particularly in works created by Studio Trigger, which was founded by several former Gainax staff members who worked on Gurren Lagann.
Even after nearly twenty years, Simon and Kamina's journey continues to inspire new fans with its unforgettable catchphrase:
"Believe in the you that believes in yourself."
A Perfect Time to Revisit a Classic
The new 4K restoration offers longtime fans an excellent excuse to revisit one of anime's most energetic adventures while introducing a new generation to the series that helped redefine modern mecha storytelling.
Whether you're a dedicated collector or simply want to relive one of Gainax's greatest achievements, this upcoming release promises to be the definitive home edition of the Gurren Lagann movies.
