One of Tokyo's most recognizable anime landmarks is entering its final days. The life-size RX-0 Unicorn Gundam statue in Odaiba will officially end its exhibition on August 31, 2026, bringing an almost nine-year run at DiverCity Tokyo Plaza to a close.
The massive Gundam has stood at the Festival Plaza outside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza since September 2017, becoming a popular destination for Gundam fans and visitors to Tokyo.
With only a few weeks remaining before the exhibition ends, fans now have one of their final opportunities to see the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam at its longtime Odaiba home.
Nearly Nine Years in Odaiba
The life-size Unicorn Gundam statue was completed on September 24, 2017, replacing the famous RX-78-2 Gundam statue that had previously occupied the area.
Based on the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, the installation quickly became much more than a promotional display. Its enormous scale and transformation-inspired presentation turned it into one of Odaiba's best-known attractions.
The statue stands approximately 19.7 meters tall and weighs around 49 tons. Its presentation incorporates illuminated sections and moving components designed to reproduce elements of the Unicorn Gundam's transformation between Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode.
A Special Final Version of the Unicorn Gundam
Bandai Namco Filmworks is marking the statue's final months with a special appearance created specifically for its farewell.
From June 20 through August 31, 2026, the statue is being presented as the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Ver. TWC FINAL.
The final version features special decorations designed by renowned mechanical designer Hajime Katoki, whose work has been closely associated with the Unicorn Gundam and numerous other mobile suits throughout the Gundam franchise.
The special presentation was created as a gesture of appreciation to the many visitors who have come to see the statue during its almost nine years in Odaiba.
The End of an Era for Gundam Fans in Tokyo
The removal represents another major change for a location that has been closely connected with Gundam for well over a decade.
Before the Unicorn Gundam arrived, Odaiba was home to a life-size representation of the original RX-78-2 Gundam. That statue became an internationally recognizable attraction before its exhibition ended in 2017.
The RX-0 Unicorn Gundam then continued that tradition, introducing a more elaborate installation capable of recreating aspects of the mobile suit's transformation.
For international anime fans visiting Tokyo, seeing the enormous Gundam standing outside DiverCity has become an iconic part of the Odaiba experience.
Gundam's Legacy Goes Back to 1979
While Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is a more recent entry in the franchise, the history behind the statue stretches back to the original Mobile Suit Gundam television series, which premiered in Japan in 1979.
The original series helped popularize a different approach to giant-robot anime, presenting mobile suits as military machines within a larger science-fiction conflict rather than simply portraying them as traditional superheroes.
Over the following decades, Gundam developed into one of Japan's most influential anime franchises, expanding through television series, movies, manga, video games and the enormously popular Gunpla model kits.
The presence of a full-scale Gundam in Tokyo became a physical representation of that legacy, allowing generations of fans to see something from the animated world recreated at an extraordinary scale.
August 31 Marks the Final Day
The RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Ver. TWC FINAL will remain on display through August 31, 2026, at the Festival Plaza on the second floor of DiverCity Tokyo Plaza in Odaiba.
After nearly nine years overlooking the area, the end of the exhibition will close an important chapter in the history of Gundam attractions in Tokyo.
For fans able to visit Odaiba before the end of August, this is the final opportunity to see the life-size Unicorn Gundam in its special farewell configuration before the long-running display comes to an end.
