Princess Mononoke (1997) Lands in Japanese IMAX Theaters with 4K Digital Remaster

More than 25 years after its original release, Hayao Miyazaki’s landmark film Princess Mononoke is roaring back into cinemas, this time in dramatic 4K digital remaster for IMAX screens across Japan.

The remastered version began its Japanese run on Friday, 24 October 2025, following earlier limited IMAX releases overseas. The upgrade has been overseen by Studio Ghibli itself, and aims to deliver a richer, more immersive experience, deeper forest greens, sharper expressions, and finer details in the action sequences.

Originally released on 12 July 1997, Princess Mononoke was a box‑office phenomenon in Japan, drawing 14.2 million viewers and earning around ¥19.3 billion. With this new remaster, viewers have a chance to revisit the epic tale of Ashitaka, San, the forest spirits and the fragile boundary between humanity and nature, now with enhanced visuals that bring new life to the classic..
