An anime Ghost of Tsushima for 2027

A new anime based on the acclaimed game Ghost of Tsushima is in the works and is set to be released exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027. This marks the first animated adaptation of a PlayStation Studios game, bringing the rich world of Ghost of Tsushima to life in a bold new format. The series will be focused on the multiplayer co-op mode, Legends, expanding on the game's lore and exploring its thrilling action in an anime style.

In partnership with Aniplex, the studio behind popular anime like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, and Sword Art Online, the series will be directed by Takanobu Mizuno, with Gen Urobuchi (known for his work on NITRO PLUS) handling the story composition. Kamikaze Douga will be providing the animation, while Sony Music will serve as the strategic partner for the music and original soundtrack.

Ghost of Tsushima, a critically acclaimed open-world action-adventure game, was originally released on PlayStation 4 in 2020, followed by a PlayStation 5 release the following year and a PC launch in 2024. Set in feudal Japan, the game has sold over 13 million copies across all platforms, earning it a massive fanbase worldwide. Its gripping storyline and stunning visuals captured players' attention, making it one of the standout titles in recent years.

According to Rahul Purini, president of Crunchyroll, “The Ghost of Tsushima anime will offer fans an exciting new way to experience the game in an anime style that will be bold and groundbreaking.” Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, added, “Having already proven the immense quality and versatility of our gaming properties through numerous successful film and TV projects, we couldn’t be more excited to announce our first-ever anime adaptation.”

The immersive world of Ghost of Tsushima and its Legends mode, inspired by Japanese mythology, provide the perfect backdrop for this project. Aniplex's partnership in bringing Sucker Punch's beloved game to the screen promises to deliver an animated series that will captivate both fans of the game and anime enthusiasts alike.

While this announcement has fans eagerly awaiting more details about the creative team and voice cast, there are also rumors of a Ghost of Tsushima film in the works, with John Wick director Chad Stahelski at the helm. However, no new updates have been released on the film’s progress.

In the meantime, Sucker Punch Productions is working on the highly anticipated sequel, Ghost of Yotei, set to launch on PlayStation 5 in 2025. This will follow in the footsteps of the original game, taking players deeper into the world of Ghost of Tsushima.

The Ghost of Tsushima anime adaptation is the latest in a series of gaming-to-screen projects from PlayStation Productions, founded in 2019 to bring PlayStation games to film and television. Following the success of films like Uncharted and Gran Turismo, as well as series like Twisted Metal and The Last of Us, the studio continues to expand its presence in the entertainment industry. Fans can look forward to the second season of The Last of Us in April 2025, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie that has been confirmed, and a Helldivers film currently in development.

Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the release of the Ghost of Tsushima anime, including more on its creative team, cast, and other exciting developments in the world of PlayStation Productions.
