After dying, the protagonist is expelled from the cycle of reincarnation because of the sin he committed. An angel tells him he has won a lottery and offers a chance to recall that sin. The protagonist’s spirit then inhabits the body of 14‑year‑old Makoto, a boy who had taken his own life, and he struggles to recover his memories. He feels a deep distress over Makoto’s tragic circumstances and the fact that he is borrowing the boy’s body. Through this experience, he begins to understand why people hurt each other, because the world is too colorful to discern each person’s true nature. The film is adapted from Mori Eto’s award‑winning first‑person narrative novel, and it has received several awards in Japan.
