Based on a short story by the beloved children’s writer Kenji Miyazawa, *Ginga Tetsudō no Yoru* invites viewers on a slow‑paced, dreamlike voyage through space and time. When the lonely boy Giovanni leaves his hill town to fetch milk for his ailing mother, he finds himself aboard a faster‑than‑light steam railroad that crosses the Milky Way. The train stops at stations within various constellations, reminiscent of the planets explored by St. Exupéry’s *Little Prince*, where curious adventures await and a wide assortment of human “types” meet. Reality and fantasy blur aboard the train, and its interstellar journeys hint at the broader journey through life. The characters are rendered as cats, presumably to sidestep the challenges of animating human figures.
