Description
Itō Kaiji lives a low‑level life of petty theft, stealing car emblems and slashing tires for a living. One day his routine is interrupted by a man in a trench coat who introduces himself as Endō, a debt collector. Endō reveals that Kaiji has been dragged into a debt originally taken out by his former co‑worker, Furuhata Takeshi, for 300,000 yen. When Takeshi vanished, the debt was transferred to Kaiji. The accrued interest has ballooned to 3,850,000 yen. Endō offers Kaiji a desperate way out: he will be transported to a boat where debtors, all of whom are in the same situation, will gamble with the borrowed money to try and pay off their loans.
