In 1968, Kawamoto’s debut puppet film presents a moral tale set in a monastery garden. The head monk entrusts a young acolyte with guarding a beautiful cherry tree while he steps out. The monk underestimates the acolyte’s fondness for sake. At the same time, a samurai and his servant choose the garden for a picnic beneath the blossoming tree. The acolyte refuses to let them in, but the scent of their sake tests his resolve. The story concludes with the disciple being justly punished for a brief lapse.
