Based on a popular web‑released manga by Hidekazu Himaruya, *Hetalia Axis Powers* is a cynical gag series set in Europe between the end of World War I and the start of World War II (1918‑1939). It portrays nationalities as exaggerated caricatures embodied by bishōnen characters, such as Italia Veneziano who loves pasta and women, the German (Deutsche) who enjoys potatoes and sausages, and Nippon, an otaku boy. The manga’s story arcs span a wide range of periods, from ancient times to modern geopolitics, with the title deriving from the Japanese words for “useless” (hetare) and Italy (Italia).
