Cat Returns is loosely connected to Whisper of the Heart, featuring two characters from that film, Muta, the cat, and the Baron, the cat statue. There is no other link between the two movies, and it is not a sequel. The story is based on Hiiragi Aoi’s Neko no Danshaku (Baron of Cat).
