The Z Project was conceived to relieve the younger generation from the burden of caring for the elderly. Its aim was to create a machine that could attend to seniors autonomously, and at first it seemed like a promising solution that many young people supported. However, when the elderly Mr. Takazawa became the first test subject for the Z‑001 device, Haruko began to question both the hospital’s methods and the ethical implications of the technology. As she faces institutional opposition and increasing doubt, she discovers a striking feature of the machine: it contains a biochip that eventually develops its own consciousness.
